Setting the Stage: Vampire Courts of Eville

With Jasper’s return and the ensuing unraveling of the troubled Domain, the Kindred of Evansville have begun aligning themselves into various camps. They compete on the edge of violent clashing to establish superiority and gather the necessary influence to claim solitary control of the city. Half a dozen factions currently hold enough sway to be considered in this conflict.

The Rose Court
(aka The Old Court, The East Court)

The remnants of Eville’s previous, ousted Court have withdrawn to holdings in Newburgh, where they lick their wounds and plot their return to prominence. Led by Nakia and Cornell, the Rose Court holds largely to Invictus traditions and exerts influence over the Daeva and Ventrue Clans. Nearly all of the other Courts can count grudges against the old regime but the Rose Court finds itself at greatest odds with The Noble Court, friction arising over control of the Invictus and Ventrue Clan loyalty.

The Noble Court
(aka The High Court, The West Court)

The vacuum of power created in Jasper’s wake gave the Kindred of Mount Vernon their long-withheld autonomy. Landon rules this West Court, upholding strictly Invictus and Sanctified practices, and has the most pull within the Ventrue and Nosferatu Clans. Nominally the most powerful Court in the Domain, it may be biting off more than it can chew by engaging in conflict with nearly every other Court in some way in addition to differences with other local supernaturals.

The Cellar Court
(aka The Low Court, The Hidden Court)

Their population bolstered by refugees seeking shelter from recent turmoil, the Kindred inhabitants of the darker, dirtier places of Eville hold greater power than ever before. Looking to Moses whenever they need a leader, this introverted Court is made up of Carthian, Acolyte, and even some Sanctified Vampires with influence in the Nosferatu and Mehket Clans. While no fan of the Rose Court, any animosity is overshadowed by troubles with The Noble and Blessed Courts stemming from ideological (ie Covenant-related) conflicts.

The Blessed Court
(aka The Holy Court, The North Court)

As expected, after Sebastien’s witch-hunt was crushed, the fallout shattered the already fractured Lancea Sanctum in Eville. Less expected was, though other Courts harbor Sanctified, that a core would reform and raise a Court of their own. Taking guidance from Bishop Beckett, the Court (obviously) holds to Sanctified philosophies and practices but currently holds no extended favor with any of the Kindred Clans. Still looked upon as a scapegoat to blame for Sebastien’s actions, the Blessed Court endures residual animosity from the Domain as a whole but comes into direct conflict with the Noble and Cellar Courts over differential religious beliefs.

The Nomad Court
(aka The Bastard Court, The South Court)

An ever-changing population with few static figures, the influence of nomadic Kindred on Eville is still undeniable and, given the current climate, has led to a shift in how they look at the Domain. No central leader has come forward but a few prominent individuals reign strong enough to demand cohesiveness when a unified front is needed. In this way, the Nomad Court has claimed Henderson and none of the others are in any place to dispute or challenge this fact. Wanderers first, all Covenants and Clans have a place in the Nomad Court. All of the other Courts keep a wary eye on the Nomads, getting a hungry smirk for their trouble.

The Tribe
(aka The Pack, The Daughters)

Seemingly less interested in taking over and more concerned with enforcing Jasper’s nebulous will that “his land” not suffer the indignity of the chaos he returned to, his Childer and extended family still hold enough influence and consideration to be considered among the Courts. Looking to the eldest of his daughters, Selina, as necessary, these Kindred do not hold to any Covenant, though many are of the Ordo Dracul, and have great sway with the Gangrel Clan. None of the Courts willingly put themselves at odds with this small but dangerous faction and the Tribe singles out no enemies above any others.

Setting the Stage: Eville

The World of Darkness.

What is it?

Or, a better question, what is it to us? In all likelihood you’ve already picked up the core World of Darkness book or there’d be little reason for you to have interest. So you already have at least some idea of the intention behind the World of Darkness. Hell, the name itself immediately sets the framework. But different people have different perspectives, different interpretations. What the World of Darkness is to you may be quite different from what it is to us and I know full well that what it is to us has changed over the years, as we have come to better understand the “reality” of the place.

So we start with the basic assumption, drawn from the name… it is much like the world we walk through every day of our lives, just darker. But what does that mean? Darker? To some people it means a total wash of bleak and forboding evil. But that doesn’t do it for us. Instead, we focus more on the shadows. Everything casts a shadow. And in that observation you come to realize that there is a little bit of darkness that lurks behind everyone and everything.

THAT is our World of Darkness.

It isn’t a place where everything sucks and nothing happy ever occurs but a place were even the good things are touched by something dark.

Evansville, Indiana

So what is Evansville like in the World of Darkness?

Apart from the ever-present shadows, as mentioned above, Evansville is a much different place in our World of Darkness. For starters, it is bigger. In the real world, the City of Evansville counts just under 120,000 people, the current mark of a slim but steady population decline that started in the 1960s. For our World of Darkness, this trickle of loss never occurred and, instead, a firm pace of expansion was established. Evansville, for our purposes, is about twice its real world size and population. But, as we said, there is a shadow behind everything and more people means more shadows. More business, opportunity, and sophistication come alongside more corruption, crime, and abuse.

Likewise, the Evansville Metropolitan Area must accommodate our changes in its World of Darkness persona. Some neighboring communities, like Darmstadt or Newburgh, are prime avenues for Evansville’s growth and will have their populations absorbed. Others, such as Booneville or Fort Branch, may not have been so lucky and may have seen their populations stripped away. Still others, like Mt Vernon or Henderson, remain distinct enough to retain their individual identities while still benefiting from the greater prosperity in their own ways.

That all being the general case, why do we care?

As players, nearly all of us have a connection to Evansville. We live here or once did. We have family here and visit with some regularity. That familiarity breeds the interest in developing what our fictional city is like. We want to see how the people and places have changed when their shadows harbor a little more darkness.

For our characters there are more variables and so things can be more complicated. There are a lot of possible reasons why an individual’s story may find them in Eville at this time. Until recently the area had a reputation for being unremarkable and, as a consequence, was also known for a relatively relaxed atmosphere. Lacking many of the burdens that came with supernatural societies in greater regions, it drew those fleeing such troubles while maintaining enough desirable qualities to provide them reason to stay. It became a place to go when you didn’t want to be bothered. A haven for the nomads, pariahs, fugitives, and hermits of all walks and makes. Overlooked such as it was, few understood just how rich the area is in untapped resources. By ancient design or peculiar coincidence, Eville and its surroundings are thick with wellsprings, flows, and sites important to supernaturals of all types.

In the last decade, though, this has changed. Change sparked fires and Eville has burned in the ensuing chaos. Now the Vampires are destabilized, many Courts all vying for the necessary superiority to claim the Domain as their own. Long-standing Werewolf Packs have become fractured or decimated, leaving key territories unguarded and untended. Scattered Cabals, unfriendly and distrusting, are incapable of forming a Consilium to manage the encroachment of the Abyss. Changelings huddle in their Holds, besieged by Loyalists and fearful of stalking Fae. The Bound and their Geist companions navigate the death that all of this has wrought, the Twilight Network wary and overwhelmed. And Hunters, outnumbered and outgunned, find their dedication both tested and rewarded by such a excited, target-rich environment.

Those are the broad strokes.

The fine details are left up to us.

Back to Eville

Not far from the park that shared its name, he stood and watched the dregs of the sunset slip below the horizon. It was a new habit that he had picked up. The colors were a measurement of his progress. Straying so far towards his darker nature, it was a necessary exercise to judge the distance to the other side of the spectrum. He was a realist, though.

He had no hope of seeing the opposite shore.

This was not some pitifully cliche longing for the light and warmth of the day… of life. Leave that to the Neonates. He was a ruthless predator and he accepted that. As long as he was in control. The Beast would not abide by the yellows or oranges but perhaps the reds were within reach. For now he took in the spectacle as the violets and purples gave way to blues until indigo inevitably took dominion over the sky.

Satisfied with his reverie, he turned north and began to walk. His boots rolled across the paved path heel to toe. One foot in front of the other. A smooth, even pace. He paused by the old train, enshrined on its fragment of the track, and remembered watching from nearly this exact angle as a chase came to an end there. It was the moment when he decided to involve himself with the Professor and his students.

A beginning of things.

And now things were very different.

Much like someone walking through the halls of the museum he was passing, gleaning stories from the stored antiquities, he was strolling the city sorting through his own collected memories. The pagoda of the visitor’s center slid by, unremarkable in his personal history and just another building along the way to the quartet of brightly lit pillars ahead. He had someone to meet there but he had time.

One foot in front of the other.

A smooth, even pace.

It was the only way to travel through time. He was in no hurry. It was the only way to come home.

Eville is not the same.

None claim the title of Prince but many Courts struggle to bring enough order to the chaos that they can take control. Who remains? Who sleeps? Who is no more?

And who will come back?
